Positional plagyocephalia or "flat head" has become a very common occurrence with the high recommendation to place babies on their backs to sleep, but with the huge reduction in the incidences of SIDS you really wouldn't sleep them any other way.

The problem is, babies tend to find a comfy spot, then once a flat spot starts the baby's head will generally return to that same spot making the flat spot even more pronounced. Unfortunately, some infants heads may take years to return to a normal shape and can look very strange. At present, the only known cure is for the infant to wear an uncomfortable helmet 22 hours a day. So, as any Doctor will tell you, prevention is better than a cure.
